HAMEREX aus England treiben – im positiven Sinne – seit 2004 ihr Unwesen und frönen klassischem Heavy Metal mit NWOBHM-Einschlag sowie aussergewöhnlichen, fast derberen Spielarten des Metal zuzuordnenden Vocals. Da es sich um eine Eigenproduktion handelt und gerade im Undergrund andere Massstäbe in Sachen Sound und Produktion gelten, möchte ich gleich auf das Wesentliche kommen: Die Songs! Hier zeigt sich das Quintett von der Insel prinzipiell von ihrer besten Seite. “Screams And Pain”, das sich dem gelungenen Opener “Into War” anschliesst, verfügt über schneidende Riffs und aggressiven Gesang. Das folgende an HAWKWIND erinnernde “Echoes Of The Hatred” ist eher epischer Natur, rockt aber dennoch ganz gut und hat einen gewissen Charme. Abschliessend sorgt “Midnight Hour” noch einmal für die volle Dröhung in Sachen ursprünglichem Heavy Metal mit hymnischem Charakter.

Größtes Manko ist also der sehr dumpfe und rumpelige Sound, der auch ohne großes Budget anno 2009 definitiv besser hinzubekommen ist. Freunde traditioneller Klänge und vor allem überzeugte Underground-Fetischisten sollten zumindest mal reinhören, denn vom spielerischen und kompositorischen Aspekt her sind HAMEREX schon interessant, wenn auch nicht die große Sensation.

HAMEREX from England have been – in a good way – up to mischief since 2004 and indulge classic Heavy Metal with NWOBHM influences and extraordinary vocals that almost belong to more crude variations of Metal. As they are self-published and with the different standards for sound and production that apply in the underground, I’d like to skip to the important part: the songs! This is where the British quintet how what they do best. “Screams And Pain”, that follows the well-made opener “Into War”, has cutting riffs and aggressive vocals. The next song, “Echoes of The Hatred” is of a more epic nature, but rocks quite well and has a certain appeal to it. In closure, “Midnight Hour” provides a full dose of original Heavy Metal with hymn character.

Their biggest flaw is the very muffled and bumpy sound, which can definitely be done better these days, even without a large budget. Friends of traditional chords and especially devoted ungerground fetishists should at least give it a good hear, because from a technical and composition perspective, HAMEREX are definitely interesting, even if not the next big thing.
